Jammu And Kashmir Weather: IMD Forecasts Rain And Snowfall Over Next Five Days

As Jammu and Kashmir experience the peak of ' Chillai Kalan,' a 40-day phase known for its severe cold, the region anticipates an increase in rainfall and snowfall over the next five days. This climatic shift comes as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has identified two western disturbances approaching the area. These weather patterns are set to influence not only Jammu and Kashmir but also extend their impact to the Western Himalayan Region, including states like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Recent snowfalls have transformed parts of Jammu and Kashmir into captivating winter landscapes. Areas such as Bandipora, along with its higher reaches, and the border regions of Gurez, Dawar, and Tulail, have already been covered in a fresh layer of snow, creating picturesque scenes reminiscent of a white wonderland on Sunday. The high mountain pass known as 'Razdan Top’ also experienced snow and winds, yet the 85 km Bandipora road has remained accessible for travel, ensuring connectivity within the region.

Dr. Naresh Kumar, a scientist with the IMD, highlighted the anticipated weather changes, stating a forecast of rain and snow in the coming days over the Western Himalayan Region. This weather activity is attributed to the influence of the two western disturbances. In addition to the snow, northern states such as Punjab, Haryana, Western UP, Delhi NCR, and North Rajasthan are expected to receive rainfall on the 22nd and 23rd of January. The forecast also includes a prediction of dense fog enveloping areas in Punjab, Haryana, North Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh over the next two to three days, potentially impacting visibility and transportation.

Tourists have already begun to revel in the chilled weather conditions, particularly in the Bhaderwah area of Jammu and Kashmir, where they were seen enjoying the snowy environment. A video circulating showcases Bhaderwah blanketed in thick snow, attracting visitors to experience the wintry charm of the region firsthand.

Despite the cold wave tightening its grip, the IMD has reported that Srinagar City experienced a temperature of 4.1 degrees Celsius around 11:30 am on Sunday. However, the Meteorological Department has not issued specific warnings or alerts for the districts within the city at this time.

As the cold wave persists, Jammu and Kashmir's Doda's Bhalessa area has also emerged as a winter wonderland following a fresh snowfall, adding to the region's allure during this extreme winter period known as 'Chillai Kalan’. This season, characterized by plummeting temperatures and scenic snow-covered landscapes, continues to draw visitors, despite the chill, underscoring the region's enduring appeal as a destination for winter tourism.
