Jammu and Kashmir Elections: Mehbooba Mufti's Strategy to Attract Muslim Voters Amid Criticism
In Jammu and Kashmir, elections have been conducted for 50 seats, with another round scheduled for October 1st. This upcoming election will cover 40 seats, including 24 in Jammu Division and 16 in North Kashmir. Amidst this, PDP leader Mehbooba Mufti has made a strategic move to appeal to Muslim voters, which might negatively impact the India bloc.

The electoral battle in Jammu and Kashmir is a three-way contest involving the National Conference-Congress alliance, the PDP, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). All these parties are part of the India bloc. The BJP holds significant influence in Jammu but is less strong in Kashmir.
Mehbooba Mufti faced criticism for her silence on Hindu killings in Bangladesh while mourning Hasan Nasrallah's death. Nasrallah, a Hizbullah leader, was killed in an Israeli attack. Mehbooba's decision to pause her campaign for a day following his death surprised many.
Kavinder Gupta, a senior BJP leader and former deputy chief minister under Mehbooba's government, criticised her actions. He questioned her grief over Nasrallah's death while ignoring attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh. "These are crocodile tears, and people understand the motivation behind them," Gupta stated.
Mehbooba announced on X that she would suspend her campaign for a day. She expressed solidarity with Lebanon and Gaza's martyrs, particularly Hasan Nasrallah. "We stand with the people of Palestine and Lebanon in this sad and harsh time of resistance," she wrote.
BJP leaders in Jammu have not been alone in targeting Mehbooba's intentions. Altaf Thakur, a prominent BJP figure in the valley, accused her of Muslim appeasement. He described her actions as an election stunt aimed at gaining Muslim community support.
Electoral Implications
The current election is seen as one of the toughest for the PDP after several past elections. Only 16 seats in the Muslim-majority Kashmir region are available in this final phase. Meanwhile, 24 Hindu-majority seats in Jammu are set for polling.
If Mehbooba aims to attract Muslim voters, the BJP has countered by highlighting Hindu issues in Bangladesh. This strategy could lead to voter polarization along religious lines. Such division might harm the India bloc more significantly in Jammu.
Internal Struggles Within India Bloc
The India bloc is already experiencing internal divisions, particularly in Kashmir. If voter polarization occurs due to Mehbooba's actions, it could exacerbate these divisions further.
Hasan Nasrallah and his daughter Zainab were killed on Friday during an Israeli attack. It seems Mehbooba Mufti is leveraging the Israel-Lebanon-Gaza issue to garner Muslim votes in North Kashmir.
