Strategic Importance of Northeast India

The northeast shares borders with five neighbouring countries, serving as a bridge between the Indian subcontinent and ASEAN. Jaishankar noted that many initiatives involving India's immediate neighbours originate from this area. Projects like the Trilateral Highway and the Kaladan project are also significant, reinforcing its strategic importance.

Jaishankar stated, "In every sense, it is a hub, whose relevance will only grow with the passage of time," underlining the Union government's focus on developing this region. He encouraged envoys to familiarise themselves with its unique qualities and promote international cooperation across various sectors.

Promoting International Cooperation

The minister expressed confidence that the upcoming summit would harness the region's strengths and enhance global collaboration. He described northeast India as a gateway to Southeast Asia, a tourism centre, and a contributor to the global workforce. These aspects highlight its potential for international partnerships.

Jaishankar later shared his thoughts on X, formerly known as Twitter, about his meeting with ambassadors. He reiterated the growing significance of the northeast in connecting India with Southeast Asia and its role in tourism and global employment.

The minister's address underscored how northeast India is integral to policies such as Neighbourhood First, Act East, and BIMSTEC. By engaging with this region, foreign governments and industries can tap into new opportunities for cooperation and development.

As northeast India's relevance continues to rise, fostering international ties will be crucial for leveraging its potential. The Union government's commitment to its development aims to position it as a vital hub for regional connectivity and economic growth.
