Jaishankar Engages with Iranian Counterpart for Release of MSC Aries' Indian Crew

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged in a critical dialogue with his Iranian counterpart, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, focusing on the release of 17 Indian nationals detained on a Portuguese-flagged cargo vessel. The conversation, which took place on Sunday, also touched upon the escalating tensions between Iran and Israel, with Jaishankar advocating for restraint and a return to diplomatic negotiations.

Efforts for MSC Aries Crew Release

India's efforts to secure the release of its citizens aboard the MSC Aries, seized by the Iranian military near the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, were highlighted during the exchange. Jaishankar's appeal was made public through his statement on X (formerly Twitter), where he emphasized the importance of diplomacy and avoiding further escalation in the region.

The seizure of MSC Aries by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) Special Naval Forces reportedly stems from the vessel's associations with Israel. This incident has prompted a coordinated response from MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, which is actively working with authorities to ensure the safety of the 25 crew members and facilitate the ship's release.

Following Iran's actions, the White House National Security Council, through spokesperson Adrienne Watson, disclosed that the ship's crew includes nationals from India, the Philippines, Pakistan, Russia, and Estonia. This international dimension underscores the broader implications of the seizure amid heightened tensions between Iran and Israel.

Jaishankar's discussions with Amir-Abdollahian also covered recent hostilities in the region. Notably, Iran launched a direct attack on Israel early Sunday with drones and missiles. This was in retaliation for a suspected Israeli strike on its consulate in Damascus on April 1, which resulted in the deaths of seven Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guards, including two generals.

In response to these developments, India has called for an immediate de-escalation of tensions. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed serious concern over the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, emphasizing the threat it poses to regional peace and security. The MEA's statement underscored India's commitment to diplomacy and restraint as means to resolve the crisis.

Furthermore, India is closely monitoring the situation in West Asia, maintaining regular contact with its community through its embassies in the region. The MEA highlighted the critical need for maintaining security and stability in West Asia amidst these challenging times.

This diplomatic engagement between India and Iran over the detained Indian nationals and regional security issues reflects India's active role in promoting peace and stability in West Asia. As tensions continue to rise, India's call for diplomacy and restraint becomes ever more significant.
