Jaishankar Emphasises Need for Stability in India's Neighbourhood Ties Amid Volatility
India's External Affairs Minister, S Jaishankar, highlighted the complexities in maintaining stable relations with neighbouring countries. He noted that while India aims to foster collective interests for stability, challenges persist. "The logic every one of our neighbours must realise is that working with India will give you benefits, and not working with India has a cost," he stated, emphasising the importance of collaboration.

Jaishankar pointed out that Pakistan remains an exception due to its military-defined identity, which fosters inherent hostility. He explained that while some nations take time to understand the benefits of cooperation with India, others grasp it more quickly. The minister shared these insights during an interactive session on DD India, which he later posted on his X handle.
Strategic Relations and Infrastructure Development
Discussing India's strategic relations, Jaishankar addressed the evolving dynamics with the US and China over the past decade. He acknowledged unpredictability in US relations but stressed stabilising ties through multiple linkages. Regarding China, he highlighted the need for preparedness due to past tensions, particularly after the 2020 Galwan Valley clash.
Jaishankar criticised previous neglect of India's border infrastructure in its China policy. He argued that building robust infrastructure along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) is crucial for defending national interests. This development has enabled India to stand firm against challenges from China.
Regional Engagement and Counter-Terrorism Efforts
The minister elaborated on India's efforts to strengthen ties with neighbouring countries and regions like ASEAN and the Indo-Pacific under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership. He mentioned increased outreach to Gulf nations and deepening relationships within India's neighbourhood over the last 11 years.
On counter-terrorism, Jaishankar cited significant actions like the 2016 Uri surgical strike and 2019 Balakot air strike as part of a new approach towards Pakistan. He noted that these actions reflect a shift from previous policies and aim to establish a "new normal" where impunity is challenged.
Operations and Public Sentiment
Jaishankar discussed India's evacuation operations in conflict zones, such as Operation Sindhu amid tensions between Israel and Iran. He recalled Operation Ganga as a complex mission during wartime in Ukraine. These operations demonstrate India's commitment to protecting its nationals abroad.
The minister described Modi as a leader reflecting evolving public sentiments and self-confidence in India. He emphasised that changes in foreign policy are part of a broader strategy for a multipolar world, enhancing India's influence globally.
Jaishankar also addressed regime changes in neighbouring countries like Sri Lanka and Maldives, noting that despite initial challenges, bilateral ties remain strong. He stressed the importance of creating systems and common interests for inherent stability in relationships.
In conclusion, Jaishankar reiterated India's focus on building strategic partnerships worldwide while maintaining clarity in its foreign policy goals. The consistent theme of multipolarity underpins India's approach to international relations, aiming for minimal problems and maximum benefits through cooperation.
