Jagdambika Pal Condemns Opposition Walkout from Lok Sabha Over Waqf Amendment Bill Report
Jagdambika Pal, who leads the joint parliamentary committee on the Waqf Amendment Bill, criticised opposition members for leaving the Lok Sabha during the discussion on the panel's report. He described their actions as an "attack" on India's parliamentary democracy and traditions. The opposition claimed that dissenting notes from panel members were removed from the report, prompting their protest walkout in both Houses of Parliament.

Despite Union Home Minister Amit Shah's offer to include more dissent notes and Speaker Om Birla's assurance that it would be done, opposition members still walked out of the Lok Sabha. Pal questioned their actions, suggesting they defied the Speaker's ruling. He remarked, "When the opposition did that despite the Speaker’s decision ruling, then they did it against the Speaker," adding that this might mark a negative chapter in parliamentary history.
Opposition Walkout and Dissent Notes
The report contained 281 pages of dissent notes, according to Pal. He emphasised that the BJP had no issue with including these notes without redaction. Shah requested the Speaker to follow procedures regarding this matter. When Pal presented the report, opposition members shouted slogans, countered by treasury benches' applause, before walking out in protest against him.
Amidst the uproar, Shah addressed concerns about incomplete annexation of dissent notes. He stated, "Some opposition members have objected to their dissent notes not annexed fully. I wish to request you on behalf of my party that whatever their objections you can attach the same to the report as per parliamentary practice as you feel appropriate." He reiterated his party's lack of objection to including these notes.
Pal accused the opposition of attacking "parliamentary decorum, traditions and parliamentary democracy" by staging a walkout. He expressed disbelief over their actions despite assurances from both Shah and Birla. Pal suggested that this incident might be condemned nationwide as a breach of democratic norms.
The controversy surrounding the Waqf Amendment Bill report highlights tensions between government and opposition parties. The disagreement over dissent notes underscores ongoing challenges in maintaining parliamentary harmony. This incident reflects broader issues within India's political landscape, where procedural disputes often lead to significant confrontations.
The situation remains tense as both sides continue to defend their positions. The government's willingness to include dissenting views contrasts with opposition claims of suppression. This episode adds another layer to India's complex political dynamics, where consensus is frequently elusive amidst differing ideologies and priorities.
