Jagannath Rath Yatra 2025: Elephant Goes Out Of Control In Ahmedabad, Panic Amoung Devotees
During the Jagannath Rath Yatra in Ahmedabad, an elephant became uncontrollable, causing chaos. The incident occurred at 10 AM when the elephant, leading a group of 17, was startled by loud DJ music and whistles. It ran for about 100 meters, creating panic among the crowd. Fortunately, no serious injuries were reported.
The male elephant's agitation was calmed with the help of two female elephants. Forest department staff managed to control it and removed all three elephants from the procession. The remaining 14 elephants continued to participate in the yatra without further incidents.

Ensuring Elephant Health During Rath Yatra
The Animal Husbandry Department of Ahmedabad district took responsibility for the health of elephants participating in the Rath Yatra. Since June 23, their physical and mental well-being has been monitored continuously. Health certificates were issued after thorough checkups to ensure they were fit for the event.
Deputy Director Suketu Upadhyay mentioned that veterinary teams ensured that flies and insects did not disturb the elephants. Any illness was promptly treated to maintain their health throughout the event.
Historical Context of Jagannath Yatra
The Jagannath Rath Yatra has a rich history in Ahmedabad. In 1946, despite communal riots and lack of government permission, devotees insisted on continuing the tradition. Strict security was implemented around the temple, and Lord Jagannath was mounted on an elephant for the procession.
In 1993, bulletproof glasses were installed on chariots during riots to prevent any attacks from a distance. Such measures highlight the significance and challenges faced during past yatra events.
Managing Elephant Behaviour
To manage any potential issues with elephants during the yatra, continuous monitoring is conducted over three days. Teams from both Forest and Veterinary Departments stay with them to prevent stress or problems. If an elephant becomes agitated, dart guns are used to administer calming injections.
The Rath Yatra began at 7 AM and continued until around 9 PM. Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel initiated it with a traditional Pahind ritual using a golden broom to clean the path ahead of the chariot.
Memorable Incidents from Past Yatras
A notable incident occurred in 1985 when an elephant named Sarjuprasad threw a police van parked near the temple door during preparations for the yatra. This act was seen as divine intervention by devotees who believed Lord Jagannath wanted the procession to proceed.
Despite challenges over years, including riots and government restrictions, devotees have remained steadfast in their commitment to carrying out this traditional event peacefully.
