J-K Sets Up Committee to Regulate Water Transport Following Fatal Capsize

In a decisive response to a tragic incident where a boat capsized in the Jhelum river, resulting in the loss of six lives, authorities in Kashmir have taken significant steps towards enhancing the safety and regulation of water transport. The mishap, which occurred on the outskirts of the city and involved mostly school children, has prompted urgent action from local officials.

New Committee for Water Transport Safety

Kashmir Divisional Commissioner Vijay Kumar Bidhuri convened an urgent meeting with officers from various departments to strategize on preventing such unfortunate events in the future. A key outcome of this meeting was the establishment of a committee tasked with developing a comprehensive policy for the regulation of water transport in the region.

The committee, led by Kashmir Additional Commissioner Qazi Sarwar, includes members from the district administration and relevant departments. Their mandate encompasses not only the drafting of regulatory policies but also ensuring that existing water transportation means undergo a thorough safety audit.

Emphasizing the importance of passenger safety, Bidhuri issued an advisory that mandates life-saving jackets for all passengers on board. Additionally, he directed measures to prevent overloading by prohibiting the ferrying of passengers beyond a boat's capacity.

The meeting also touched upon the licensing and regulation of water transport operating in Jhelum and other water bodies. In light of these discussions, officials were informed about the progress of an under-construction bridge at Gandbal Batwara. The completion of this bridge, expected by June 30, is anticipated to offer an alternative and possibly safer route for commuters.

Bidhuri has instructed the Roads and Buildings Department to strictly adhere to the deadline for this crucial infrastructure project. This directive underscores the administration's commitment to not only addressing immediate safety concerns but also improving overall transport infrastructure in the region.

The establishment of this committee and the swift actions taken by local authorities reflect a proactive approach to ensuring the safety of water transport passengers. By mandating life jackets, auditing safety measures, and regulating boat capacity, Kashmir aims to safeguard its residents against future tragedies on its waterways.
