Srinagar, July 24: The Indian Army on Monday apologized for beating up eight policemen in Jammu and Kashmir's Ganderbal district. "The Army has apologized and ordered a court of inquiry," Inspector General of Police Munir Ahmad Khan told the media here.
This happened after the Director General of Police lodged a strong protest against the Saturday evening incident when the soldiers returning from the Amarnath Yatra were stopped at a checkpost in Gund area by the policemen.
The soldiers were returning after performing the Amarnath Yatra, when on Friday evening they were signalled to stop at a check post by the policemen in Gund area, 62 km from here."The infuriated soldiers then thrashed the eight policemen and also ransacked the Gund police station," the police said.
The injured policemen were admitted to hospital. Police said the Army personnel in civvies were stopped as all movement of pilgrims on the highway was disallowed after 7 p.m. due to security reasons.
