ITR Refund in 4 Hours? Income Tax Refunds Now Credited Within Hours
In the current financial year, many taxpayers are experiencing a swift process when filing their Income Tax Returns (ITR). Unlike a decade ago, when refunds took up to 90 days, some are now receiving refunds within hours. This improvement is attributed to enhanced digital processing systems.
For the fiscal year 2024-25, the ITR filing deadline is set for 15 September 2025. The Income Tax Department has activated ITR-2 and ITR-3 forms on its website. This has led to an increase in the number of people filing returns. Consequently, refunds are being processed more quickly than before.

Swift Refunds with Digital Processing
Previously, taxpayers had to wait long periods for their refunds after filing returns. In contrast, during the assessment year 2025-26, some received their refunds just four hours after filing. This rapid turnaround is a significant change from 12–13 years ago when it took over three months.
A media professional from Noida shared his experience with Financial Express. Arun Prakash filed his ITR using Form-1 at 5:03 PM and received his refund by 9:02 PM the same day. Experts note that earlier, it took about 30 to 40 days for refunds to be processed.
Steps for Filing Income Tax Returns
To file your income tax return, visit incometax.gov.in. If registered, log in using your PAN. Click on 'File Income Tax Return' under the e-file tab and select the assessment year. Choose your category such as Individual or HUF and select the appropriate form (ITR-1,2,3,4).
Fill in all required information and follow the process carefully. Ensure you e-verify your ITR once completed. Remember that failing to verify within 30 days may result in not receiving your refund.
The efficiency of digital processing has significantly reduced refund times from months to mere hours. This advancement benefits taxpayers by providing quicker access to their funds post-filing.
