ISRO's Latest Images Shows Chandrayaan-3's Vikram Lander, Pragyan Rover At Rest On The Moon

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has recently released high-resolution images of the Chandrayaan-3 lander, Vikram, and the Pragyan rover, marking the successful completion of their lunar mission. Captured on March 15, 2024, and processed by independent researcher Chandra Tungathurthi, these images offer significantly greater detail of the region than the initial images shared shortly after the historic landing on August 23, 2023.

Taken from an altitude of 65 kilometers, the new images provide a resolution of approximately 17 centimeters per pixel, an improvement over the initial post-landing image taken at a regular altitude of 100 kilometers with a resolution of 26 centimeters per pixel.

ISRO s Latest Images Shows

This enhanced resolution was achieved by lowering the orbit to 60-65 kilometers, significantly closer than the usual 100-kilometer orbit that offers a resolution of around 25 centimeters. The images offer an improved view of the Pragyan rover, the first to explore near the lunar south pole.

Chandra expressed his excitement about ISRO's expanding capabilities in his blog while sharing the pictures.

The Chandrayaan-3 mission made history by successfully landing on the lunar south pole on August 23, 2023, making India the first country to achieve a soft landing in that region and the fourth country to softly land a spacecraft on the Moon. During the mission, the Vikram lander and the Pragyan rover conducted various experiments, contributing to our understanding of the lunar environment and paving the way for future space exploration.

On April 9, the chairman of ISRO, S Somanath, announced that the development of the Chandrayaan-4 mission is underway, emphasizing ISRO's commitment to its lunar mission and ongoing space research. He made these remarks while interacting with the media after attending the twentieth anniversary of the Sat Paul Mittal School in Ludhiana.
