Israel Embassy Partners with Million Miyawaki for Urban Afforestation in India

The Embassy of Israel in India has embarked on a significant environmental initiative by partnering with the Million Miyawaki Foundation to tackle air pollution in Indian cities. This collaboration aims to plant a million trees across Delhi-NCR, employing the innovative Miyawaki method to cultivate dense, forest-like areas in urban spaces. This initiative was announced on Monday, highlighting a concerted effort to enhance urban greenery and sustainability.

Israels Green Initiative in India

At the heart of this project is the ambition to create numerous Miyawaki plantations, each comprising 600 trees and featuring up to 30 different species native to the region. This method not only supports biodiversity but also accelerates the growth of trees, allowing them to reach maturity within just two years. Such rapid growth is crucial for absorbing carbon dioxide more efficiently, thereby improving air quality in the densely populated areas of Delhi-NCR.

The Israeli Embassy's involvement in the Million Miyawaki project was officially inaugurated as part of Earth Day celebrations. Israeli Ambassador to India, Naor Gilon, demonstrated his support by participating in a tree-planting event alongside local schoolchildren. This act of planting trees served not only as a contribution to the environment but also as an educational tool, raising awareness among young people about the importance of environmental sustainability.

Sahil Sethi and Juhi Kilachand, co-founders of the Million Miyawaki Foundation, emphasized the transformative potential of the Miyawaki technique. Developed in the 1980s by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, this method enables the creation of dense forests that can grow to 20 feet high in just two years. Such rapid development is revolutionary for urban afforestation efforts, turning small plots of land into thriving mini-forests that contribute significantly to air quality improvement.

The collaboration between the Embassy of Israel and the Million Miyawaki Foundation represents a proactive approach to environmental conservation. By adopting and promoting the Miyawaki technique, this initiative not only aims to beautify urban landscapes but also addresses critical environmental challenges such as air pollution and loss of biodiversity. Through community-led efforts and educational outreach, the project seeks to instill a sense of responsibility towards nature among citizens, encouraging them to take part in creating a greener, more sustainable future for Indian cities.
