Indore Scripts Electoral History with Record NOTA Votes and BJP's Massive Win
Indore has set a new record in the Indian electoral history by registering the highest-ever NOTA (None of the Above) votes in the country, with a total of 2,18,674 votes, surpassing the previous record held by Bihar's Gopalganj in 2019. In the recent Lok Sabha polls, BJP candidate Shankar Lalwani emerged victorious from the Indore seat in Madhya Pradesh by an impressive margin of 11,75,092 votes. This election saw all 13 candidates competing against Lalwani lose their security deposit, a clear indication of voter rejection.

The NOTA option, which allows voters to reject all candidates, garnered 16.28 per cent of the total votes cast in the Indore Lok Sabha seat. The nearest rival to Lalwani was Sanjay Solanki of the BSP, who secured 51,659 votes. The Congress party had urged voters to opt for NOTA after its candidate Akshay Kanti Bam withdrew from the contest at the last moment, leading to his subsequent joining of the BJP. On May 13, out of 25.27 lakh eligible voters in Indore, 61.75 per cent exercised their right to vote.
NOTA's incorporation into the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) system came in September 2013 following a Supreme Court verdict. This option has been a part of Indian elections to enable voters to express their dissatisfaction with the candidates presented. In comparison to previous years, NOTA votes have seen a significant increase, indicating a growing trend among voters to use this option as a form of protest or dissatisfaction.
The BJP has maintained its stronghold on the Indore seat for the last 35 years. In this election cycle, excluding Lalwani, NOTA votes surpassed those received by the other 13 candidates combined. In contrast to the 2019 elections where Lalwani defeated his Congress rival Pankaj Sanghvi by a margin of 5.48 lakh votes, this year's support for NOTA did not reach even half of what the Congress party garnered in 2019.
Senior Congress leader Shobha Oza commented on the record-breaking NOTA votes as a response from the people of Indore against the BJP, which she claimed considers itself above democracy and the Constitution. Former Chief Election Commissioner O.P. Rawat highlighted NOTA's symbolic impact but noted that for it to have legal implications on election results, more than 50 per cent of electors would need to choose NOTA in a seat. This scenario would signal to the political community that voters are rejecting candidates with criminal backgrounds or those deemed undeserving of their votes.
This significant turnout for NOTA in Indore reflects an evolving dynamic in Indian politics where voters are increasingly seeking meaningful choices and are willing to use available mechanisms to express their discontent with the electoral options presented to them.
