Security Review Initiated at Indore Hospital Following Patient's Caregiver Disturbance

A patient’s attendant, allegedly intoxicated, attempted to enter the room of a 25-year-old junior female doctor and misbehaved with her at a government hospital in Indore. This incident has led the hospital management to initiate an investigation after resident doctors expressed their outrage, officials reported on Monday.

Indore Hospital Reviews Security

The event occurred at Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital (MYH) during the night between Saturday and Sunday. The Junior Doctor Association (JDA) has urged MYH, one of Madhya Pradesh's largest government hospitals, to enhance security measures. They referenced the recent rape and murder of a junior doctor at a Kolkata hospital as a cautionary example.

Security Concerns Raised

Dr. Sanjay Dixit, dean of Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College (MGMMC), which is affiliated with MYH, stated that a four-member committee has been formed to investigate the incident involving the female doctor. The committee has already begun its probe and will submit a report promptly.

JDA released a video showing a private security agency watchman asleep on duty at MYH. Dr. Akash Verma, vice-president of JDA’s Indore unit, claimed the footage was from the same night when the alleged misbehaviour occurred. He stated that the attendant, under the influence of alcohol, tried to enter the female doctor's room and used abusive language.

Demands for Action

Verma demanded that the college management file an FIR against the accused man. He also called for heightened security at MYH, citing the recent tragic incident in Kolkata as a reason for urgency. "We demand that the college management get an FIR registered against the man. Security should be tightened at MYH in the wake of the rape and murder of a resident doctor at Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital last month," Verma said.

In response to these concerns, Indore Divisional Commissioner Dipak Singh, who heads the committee for security in medical facilities, visited MYH. This state government-formed panel includes officials from administrative, police, and medical education departments.

Enhanced Security Measures

Singh announced several measures to improve safety at MYH. "We have decided to limit the numbers of patients' attendants in MYH. Lighting and CCTV arrangements will be scaled up at the facility. We have decided to deploy women security staffers at some places. Regular police patrolling will also be carried out," Singh said.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing, with authorities committed to ensuring such events do not recur. The hospital management and related committees are working towards creating a safer environment for both staff and patients.

The committee's findings will be crucial in determining further actions and implementing necessary security enhancements at MYH.
