BJP and Congress Spar Over NOTA Before Indore Lok Sabha Voting
In a recent development that has stirred the political landscape of Indore, the Congress party's call to voters in the Indore Lok Sabha constituency to opt for the 'None of The Above' (NOTA) option in the upcoming polls on May 13 has sparked a heated exchange between the Congress and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on social media platforms. This appeal by Congress comes in the wake of their candidate, Akshay Kanti Bam, withdrawing his nomination on April 29 and subsequently joining the BJP.

The BJP, aiming to counteract Congress's strategy, has urged voters to avoid selecting NOTA and instead support the re-election of their candidate, Shankar Lalwani, by a significant margin. The political rivalry has intensified with Congress adopting the slogan "Note ka Jawab Nota" against BJP's rebuttal, which labels Congress's efforts as futile, likening their proposition to a counterfeit coin.
Amidst this political tug-of-war, Madhya Pradesh Minister Tulsi Silawat took to his X (formerly known as Twitter) account to share a speech by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, which seemingly discourages voters from choosing NOTA. On the other hand, State Congress president Jitu Patwari has emphasized that despite their candidate's absence from the contest, party supporters should consider NOTA as their representative in this election.
VD Sharma, the BJP chief in Madhya Pradesh, criticized Congress's move by stating that the public cannot be misled into voting for NOTA, especially after their candidate voluntarily exited the race. He underscored that such tactics would not succeed.
The BJP has maintained a stronghold on the Indore parliamentary constituency for over three decades and is confident of securing a victory margin of at least 8 lakh votes in this election cycle. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Shankar Lalwani emerged victorious over his nearest Congress rival by 5.47 lakh votes. With 14 candidates vying for the seat this time around and an electorate of 25.13 lakh eligible voters, the political dynamics in Indore are poised for an intriguing turn.
Interestingly, during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Indore witnessed a 69 percent voter turnout, with 5,045 individuals opting for NOTA. This statistic highlights a segment of the electorate's desire for an alternative beyond the traditional party candidates.
The ongoing political skirmish in Indore underscores the complexities of electoral politics and reflects the strategic maneuvers parties employ to sway voters. As both major parties ramp up their campaigns, it remains to be seen how this appeal to choose NOTA will influence voter sentiment and ultimately, the election outcome in this crucial constituency.
