Indo-Bangladesh armies flag off joint exercise in Meghalaya

The 7th annual joint exercise of the Indian and Bangladesh armies "Sampriti 2017" was flagged off on Monday at the Umroi Cantonment in the Ri Bhoi District of Meghalaya.

The Umroi Cantonment of the Indian Army boasts of a brand new state of the art joint training warfare centre.

The centre has been set up for conducting joint exercises with foreign armies and is at par with training centers of the advanced armies of the world.

Every year the joint exercise is held alternatively in India and Bangladesh. This year 14 officers from Bangladesh and 20 officers from India are taking part in the joint exercise.

Organised by the Red Horns Division of the Gajaraj Corps, the joint exercise is scheduled to continue till November 11.

Sumeet Newton, Public Relation Officer, Defence (Guwahati) stated "The Indo-Bangladesh joint exercise will send a strong message to the world that both the countries understand the fast emerging menace of transnational terrorism and are prepared to combat it together."

Along with building and promoting positive relations between the two countries, the joint exercise aims to augment interoperability.

Another objective is to share experiences and techniques in the field of counter insurgency and counter terrorism.

India and Bangladesh share 4.096km long international border, the 5th longest land border in the world.

The Indian state of West Bengal shares 2217km of border with Bangladesh; Assam 262 km; Tripura 856km; Mizoram 180km and Meghalaya 2217km.
