IndiGo To End Contract With Turkish Airlines: Read Details
In response to the recent geopolitical tensions between India and Turkey, the Indian government has taken a decisive step by instructing IndiGo to terminate its aircraft lease with Turkish Airlines promptly. This directive is a consequence of Turkey's stance in favor of Pakistan following the tragic Pahalgam attack, which resulted in the loss of 26 lives, the majority being tourists. This move by the Indian government underscores the growing diplomatic strain between India and Turkey, further exacerbated by Turkey's support for Islamabad during Operation Sindoor.
The decision to revoke IndiGo's lease comes after the Indian authorities also cancelled the security clearance for Celebi Aviation, a Turkish company involved in operations at nine major Indian airports, including the capital, New Delhi. These actions reflect India's firm stance against countries that support Pakistan, especially in the context of terrorism and regional security.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has given IndiGo a one-time extension of three months to continue operating the two Boeing 777 aircraft it has leased from Turkish Airlines, now until August 31. This extension aims to minimize disruptions in flight operations and prevent inconvenience to passengers. The DGCA has made it clear that IndiGo should not request any further extensions for these aircraft leases. This mandate comes amid concerns over potential operational challenges that IndiGo could face due to the abrupt termination of the lease agreement.
IndiGo, which had initially secured permission to operate the two Boeing 777 aircraft until May 31, had sought a six-month lease extension from the Civil Aviation Ministry. However, the recent geopolitical developments and the subsequent government directive have led to a significant change in plans for the airline.
The CEO of IndiGo, Pieter Elbers, has expressed the airline's intention to adhere to any governmental guidelines amid these developments. He emphasized the airline's commitment to compliance, stating, "Flights between India and Turkey are governed within the bilateral air service agreement. We are compliant today and we will continue to comply with any government regulations on those lines."
