First Greenfield Shipyard, HSL, Turns 85! Marks Naval Milestone Amidst Infrastructure Leap, Financial Revival

Hindustan Shipyard Limited (HSL), one of India's key state-owned naval shipbuilders, celebrated its 85th anniversary by initiating construction of the Navy's fourth Fleet Support Ship (FSS), unveiling significant infrastructure improvements, and highlighting a remarkable financial and strategic turnaround.

On June 19, Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi formally launched the steel-cutting ceremony for the new FSS. He emphasised its strategic significance, noting that the ship would notably enhance the Indian Navy's operational endurance, supporting longer and more complex maritime missions. The initiative by India's first Green Field Shipyard aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision, reinforcing India's commitment to regional maritime security and indigenous defence manufacturing.

HSL's 85th Foundation Week (June 12-21) celebrations reflected its broader strategic objectives and industry growth. Events included tributes to founder Seth Walchand Hirachand, employee wellness activities such as yoga sessions, and an MSME conclave focused on enhancing ease and speed of business cooperation. The shipyard showcased several infrastructure upgrades, including a new valve-testing facility, digital information kiosk, modernised dining areas, refurbished residential quarters, enhanced training spaces, community halls, a new power room, and the opening of a dedicated Motivation Hall. Additionally, twelve key publications were introduced to streamline internal processes and reinforce a culture of operational excellence.

The celebrations underscored HSL's remarkable turnaround under Commodore Hemant Khatri's leadership, from a decades-long financial crisis-with negative net worth peaking at Rs 1,023 crore in FY 2014-15-to recent profitability and organisational stability. The COVID-19 pandemic posed severe challenges, resulting in a loss of Rs 85 crore for the shipyard in FY 2020-21. Nevertheless, strategic reforms implemented after 2020 helped drive a sustained recovery to a positive networth after 40 years.

"Our journey transcends financial milestones like achieving Mini Ratna status," Commodore Khatri explained. "It represents a significant shift in professional capabilities-from constructing small vessels to sophisticated strategic naval platforms such as INS Dhruv and INS Nistar. This turnaround has been driven by competence, collaborative teamwork, and courage."
The construction of the fourth FSS is being undertaken using HSL's upgraded slipway infrastructure, featuring a powerful 300-tonne Goliath crane, significantly increasing the shipyard's capability for larger projects, including future Landing Platform Docks (LPDs).

HSL's current trajectory supports India's wider 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' initiative, positioning the shipyard to contribute significantly to India's goal of becoming a major global naval shipbuilding hub under the "Make for the World" campaign.
The attendance of the Chief of Naval Staff at the steel-cutting ceremony reflects heightened trust by the Indian Navy in HSL's strengthened leadership, technical excellence, and its trajectory towards becoming a key player in India's defence manufacturing ecosystem.
