Opposition Leaders Demand Government Action on India's Haj Quota Reduction Amid Reports from Saudi Arabia
Reports from Saudi Arabia suggest a sudden reduction in India's Haj quota, causing concern among opposition leaders. They have urged the government to address this issue with Saudi authorities. However, there has been no official response from the Indian government regarding these claims.

Congress general secretary Syed Naseer Hussain expressed his shock over the cancellation of 52,000 Haj slots for Indian pilgrims, despite payments being made. He called on Dr. S Jaishankar, the Minister for External Affairs, to engage with Saudi officials to resolve the matter and restore the slots, emphasising that India's significant Muslim population warrants more slots.
Concerns Over Private Quota Reduction
Mehbooba Mufti, leader of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), also highlighted the issue. She noted that reports indicate an 80% cut in India's private Haj quota, causing distress among pilgrims and tour operators nationwide. In a post on X, she urged the Ministry of External Affairs to promptly address this with Saudi authorities to find a solution.
Last week, Dr. Chandra Shekhar Kumar, Secretary of the Union Ministry of Minority Affairs, visited Saudi Arabia to assess Haj preparations. He expressed satisfaction with the hygienic and stress-free accommodations arranged for pilgrims, ensuring a smooth experience.
Allocation and Policy Details
According to India's Haj Policy for 2025, 70% of the total Haj pilgrims' quota will be managed by the Haj Committee of India. The remaining quota will be allocated to private Haj Group Organisers. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has allotted a total quota of 1,75,025 (1.75 lakh) for India in 2025.
The situation remains tense as stakeholders await an official statement from the Indian government. The opposition's call for immediate intervention underscores the urgency of addressing this unexpected development in Haj arrangements.
