8 Indians Lured into Illegal Jobs in Myanmar Successfully Rescued

Eight Indian nationals, who were victims of a job scam in the Hpa Lu region of Myawaddy, Myanmar, have been rescued. The Indian embassy in Yangon announced this on Sunday. The embassy has reiterated its earlier advice urging Indian nationals seeking jobs in Myanmar to exercise caution to avoid being lured into fake or illegal employment.

Indians Rescued from Myanmar Job Scam

The embassy posted on X that the eight Indian nationals, victims of a scam centre in Hpa Lu, Myawaddy, were rescued and handed over safely to Myanmar police and immigration authorities. The support of Myanmar authorities and local assistance was crucial. "We thank them and strongly reiterate our advisory on fake job rackets," it said.

International Crime Syndicate Warning

Last month, the embassy issued an advisory warning about an international crime syndicate active in the Myawaddy region on the Myanmar-Thailand border. The advisory urged Indians to be cautious before accepting job offers in the region. The embassy noted an increase in incidents involving Indian nationals falling victim to these syndicates.

A new location at Pha Lu area, south of Myawaddy town, has recently emerged where most Indian victims are trafficked into via Thailand. These individuals are recruited from India and other countries like Malaysia and the UAE. The embassy stressed the importance of adhering to their advisories to avoid such situations.

Verification of Job Offers

The embassy advised Indians not to accept job offers made through social media platforms or other unverified sources. "In view of the above, it is reiterated that Indian nationals should not accept such job offers floated through social media platforms or other unverified sources," it stated. Indian nationals are encouraged to verify the credentials of foreign employers through the Indian embassy.

The embassy's advisory also emphasised consulting respective Indian embassies before taking up any job offers in the region. "We would re-emphasise the importance of adhering to our advisories on the subject for not taking any such job offers without consulting the respective Indian embassies," it said.

The rescue operation highlights the ongoing issue of job scams targeting Indian nationals in Myanmar. The embassy's repeated warnings aim to prevent more individuals from falling prey to these fraudulent schemes.
