Kerala Woman Among Indians on Cargo Ship Seized by Iran

In a recent development that has caught the attention of international communities, a cargo ship linked to Israel and carrying 17 Indian nationals was seized by Iran in the Gulf region. Among those onboard is Antessa Joseph from Kerala, as confirmed by her family in a distressing revelation to local media. This incident has sparked concerns and prompted immediate action from both state and central government officials in India.

The family's discovery that Antessa was part of the crew, yet omitted from an official communication by Kerala's Chief Minister to the Ministry of External Affairs, has led to heightened anxiety and calls for swift governmental intervention. The Chief Minister's Office later clarified that the initial oversight was due to a lack of information regarding Antessa's presence on the ship. Measures are now being taken, with the Department of Non-Resident Keralites Affairs (NORKA) being directed to assist in the matter.

Antessa's father shared his turmoil over his daughter's absence from official records and the lack of updates on her well-being. He recounted the distressing sequence of events leading up to the confirmation of his daughter's safety, provided not by state or central authorities but by the shipping company itself. The last communication he had with his daughter was on Friday before the seizure, after which attempts to contact her failed until the company's notification.

Iran has indicated that it will soon permit Indian officials to meet with the 17 crew members, offering a glimmer of hope for their families. The seizure of the MSC Aries by Iran's Revolutionary Guards near the Strait of Hormuz on April 13 has underscored the volatile security situation in one of the world's most crucial maritime chokepoints. Initially, it was reported that three crew members—Sumesh, P V Dhanesh, and Syamnath—were identified as being from Kerala.

The MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company has stated its active cooperation with relevant authorities to ensure the well-being of all 25 crew members aboard and to facilitate the vessel's release. This incident not only highlights the geopolitical tensions in the Gulf region but also underscores the vulnerabilities faced by international shipping lanes amidst such conflicts.

As families await further news and governmental efforts continue, the international community watches closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution that ensures the safety and return of all crew members aboard the MSC Aries.
