Bangladesh Unrest Leads to Safe Return of Over 7,200 Indian Students

Over 7,200 Indian students have returned to India from Bangladesh in the past few weeks, ending on August 1, due to the current situation there. Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh provided this information in a written response to the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

7,200+ Indian Students Return from Bangladesh

Singh mentioned that approximately 19,000 Indian citizens, including over 9,000 students, reside in Bangladesh. He was responding to questions about the number of Indians living in Bangladesh for education or business purposes and whether any special campaign had been initiated to evacuate them from the violence-hit country.

The minister also addressed queries regarding the number of citizens brought back to India so far. He stated that Indian students in Bangladesh hail from various regions including Jammu and Kashmir, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, West Bengal, Tripura, and Assam. However, a state-wise list is not maintained by the Indian Mission and Posts in Bangladesh.

Coordination Efforts

The High Commission of India in Dhaka and Assistant High Commissions in Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet, and Khulna have been assisting in the voluntary return of Indian nationals. They are coordinating with Bangladeshi authorities for their safety during their stay and movement to airports and land ports along the India-Bangladesh border.

The Ministry of External Affairs has also been working with relevant Indian authorities to ensure smooth passage for citizens arriving at land ports and airports. Singh confirmed that over 7,200 Indian students had returned to India by August 1, starting from July 18.

Indian Students in Canada

In response to a separate query about Indian students' intake in Canadian universities, Singh shared data indicating an increase over the last three years. According to information from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), the number of Indian students enrolled was 216,360 in 2021, 318,380 in 2022, and 427,085 in 2023.

When asked about growing Chinese influence on India's neighbouring countries, Singh stated that the government remains vigilant about activities affecting India's interests. The "Neighbourhood First Policy" guides India's approach to neighbouring countries through strong development partnerships and vibrant cultural exchanges.

Neighbourhood Relations

India maintains extensive education, culture, trade, and investment linkages with its neighbours. Singh emphasised that India's relations with neighbouring countries are independent of these countries' relations with third nations. The government closely monitors developments impacting national security and takes necessary measures to safeguard it.

Regarding pilgrims visiting Gurudwara Shri Darbar Sahib Kartarpur in Pakistan over the last three years, Singh provided figures: 10,025 in 2021; 86,097 in 2022; and 96,555 in 2023.

Israel-Palestine Conflict

Addressing another query about India's stance on the Israel-Palestine conflict, Singh said India condemned the terror attacks on Israel on October 7 and the loss of civilian lives. India has called for a ceasefire and sustained humanitarian assistance for Gaza's people.

India has provided 70 tonnes of humanitarian aid during the ongoing conflict. This includes 16.5 tonnes of medicines and medical supplies. India has also called for the release of remaining hostages and emphasized restraint and de-escalation through dialogue and diplomacy.

Around 26,000 Indian nationals currently work in various sectors of Israel's economy. In November 2023, India and Israel concluded discussions on a framework agreement facilitating temporary employment for Indian workers. Under this agreement, 4,825 Indian workers have been placed in Israel so far.

The minister's responses covered various aspects of India's foreign relations and efforts to ensure the safety and welfare of its citizens abroad. The government's proactive measures reflect its commitment to safeguarding national interests while fostering international cooperation.
