Indian Navy Rescues Hijacked Iranian Fishing Vessel And 23 Pakistani Crew Members
New Delhi, Mar 29 - In a significant operation demonstrating its commitment to maritime security, the Indian Navy successfully rescued a hijacked Iranian fishing vessel along with its crew of 23 Pakistani nationals. The operation, which unfolded over more than 12 hours of intense tactical measures, took place in the northwest Indian Ocean near the Socotra Archipelago.
The vessel, identified as FV Al Kambar, was intercepted by INS Sumedha and later joined by INS Trishul. This rescue operation underscores the Navy's dedication to ensuring the safety of seafarers in the region, irrespective of their nationalities.

Following the interception, Indian naval specialist teams are conducting thorough sanitisation and seaworthiness checks on the fishing vessel. These measures are essential to ensure that the vessel can safely resume its normal fishing activities. The operation was initiated after reports emerged of the vessel being boarded by nine armed pirates. Through strategic and coercive tactics aligned with standard operating procedures (SOPs), the pirates were compelled to surrender, leading to the safe rescue of the crew.
The incident occurred approximately 90 nautical miles southwest of Socotra. The Indian Navy's swift action not only facilitated the rescue of the crew but also highlighted its proactive stance against piracy and maritime threats in the region. Admiral R Hari Kumar, Chief of the Indian Navy, emphasized the force's ongoing efforts to maintain a safer and more secure Indian Ocean Region. This commitment was evident in the recent completion of 100 days under Operation Sankalp, during which significant anti-piracy, anti-missile, and anti-drone operations were conducted.
Operation Sankalp has been instrumental in enhancing maritime security, with over 110 lives saved during this period, including 45 Indians and 65 foreign nationals. The operation also addressed more than 90 maritime incidents ranging from drone or missile attacks to piracy and hijacking attempts. These efforts reflect the Indian Navy's resolve to protect maritime interests and ensure the safety of international waters for all seafarers.
The successful rescue operation off Socotra is a testament to the Indian Navy's capabilities and readiness to address maritime threats effectively. As tensions and challenges persist in global waters, such operations reinforce India's position as a key player in maintaining regional stability and security. The Navy's actions not only safeguard lives but also contribute to international efforts against piracy and maritime crime.
