India Reports Two More Nationals Killed in Russia-Ukraine Conflict

India has officially communicated its concerns to Russia following the deaths of two Indian nationals who were serving in the Russian Army amidst the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This recent tragedy brings the total number of such fatalities to four, as confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday. The Indian government has made a strong appeal for the cessation of recruitment of its citizens by the Russian military and is seeking the prompt return of all Indians currently enlisted.

Two Indians Killed in Conflict

The MEA's statement emphasized India's demand for an immediate halt to any further recruitment activities by the Russian Army involving Indian nationals, highlighting that such actions are not reflective of the partnership between the two nations. "We regret to state that two Indian nationals who had been recruited by the Russian Army have recently been killed in the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine," the MEA disclosed, extending its deepest sympathies to the bereaved families.

The Indian embassy in Moscow has been actively engaging with Russian authorities, including the Ministry of Defence, to facilitate the early repatriation of the mortal remains of the deceased. The loss includes Mohammed Asfan, a 30-year-old from Hyderabad, who succumbed to injuries while serving on the frontlines in March, and Hemal Ashwinbhai Mangua, a 23-year-old from Surat, Gujarat, who died in a Ukrainian air strike in February while serving as a security helper in the Donetsk region.

In response to these incidents, both the Ministry of External Affairs and the Indian embassy in Moscow have intensified their diplomatic efforts with Russian officials for the swift release and repatriation of all Indian nationals involved with the Russian Army. These discussions have taken place at various levels, including with the Russian Ambassador in New Delhi and directly within Moscow.

The issue gained further attention following Foreign Secretary Vinay Kwatra's attendance at the Russian National Day reception hosted by the Russian embassy. Reports suggest that around 200 Indian nationals had been recruited as security helpers within the Russian military framework. To date, officials have confirmed that 10 Indians working as support staff with the Russian military have been successfully released and returned to India.

This development underscores a complex facet of international relations and military engagement amid ongoing global conflicts. The Indian government's firm stance on preventing further recruitment and ensuring the safety and return of its citizens reflects its commitment to protecting its nationals abroad.
