Journalism Seminar Calls For Law To Protect Truth-Seeking Reporters And Censure Fake News Peddlers
A seminar organized by the Indian Journalists Union (IJU) discussed challenges facing media today, including protection of truth-seeking journalists and curbing fake news. Participants also advocated for a central law to address these issues, as well as setting up a media commission.
In the heart of India's capital city, New Delhi, a significant gathering took place on October 1. Journalists and experts from various fields congregated to deliberate on the challenges that media faces daily. The seminar was organised under the auspices of the Indian Journalists Union (IJU) and called for a central law to protect truth-seeking journalists while censuring those who peddle fake news.

The attendees at this all-India seminar also advocated for setting up a media commission - a long-standing demand within journalistic circles in India. They argued that though the Press Council of India is constitutionally strong, it lacks the authority vested in a commission.
Indian Journalists Union: A Beacon For Truthful Journalism
The Indian Journalists Union (IJU), which organised this national-level seminar, has been instrumental in raising awareness about challenges confronting media at all levels. S N Sinha, seminar coordinator and former IJU president said in his statement that they are keen on bringing these issues within the ambit of law to protect truth-seeking journalists and censure fake news peddlers.
A Brainstorming Session To Address Media Challenges
In an intense brainstorming session spanning nearly three hours, representatives from over a dozen states and union territories discussed various obstacles faced by print, electronic, and social media. They deliberated upon finding ways to shield genuine journalists from harassment, intimidation, violence while considering their financial welfare as well.
Calling For A Central Law And Media Commission
The need for a central law became evident during discussions at this event. Such legislation would ensure protection for journalists pursuing truthful reporting against potential harm or intimidation tactics often employed by those opposed to ethical journalism practices. Furthermore, it was proposed that establishing a dedicated media commission could help uphold journalistic standards more effectively than existing bodies, given its higher authority.
The seminar served as a platform for journalists and experts to voice their concerns about the current state of media in India. It highlighted the urgent need for legal protections and institutional mechanisms to safeguard journalistic integrity against the increasing threat of fake news and unethical practices in journalism.
Conclusion: A Call To Action For The Indian Media
In conclusion, this seminar underscored the challenges faced by media professionals on a daily basis. The call for a central law is not just about protecting journalists but also about preserving truth in an era increasingly dominated by misinformation. The proposal to establish a media commission echoes the demand for stronger oversight over journalistic standards and practices. As one of the pillars of democracy, it's crucial that the media maintains high ethical standards while navigating through these challenging times. This event was a step forward towards achieving that objective, providing much-needed discourse on issues affecting contemporary Indian journalism.
