Sitharaman Warns of Economic Regress to 'Fragile Five' if Congress Manifesto Implemented
Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, in a recent meeting with select journalists in Pune, expressed her concerns over the Congress party's poll manifesto, suggesting that its implementation could potentially harm the Indian economy. Sitharaman criticized the manifesto, comparing it to a document more suited to the Muslim League, and questioned the financial viability of the promises made within it.

According to Sitharaman, the Congress's manifesto lacks the necessary financial planning to support its promises. She highlighted the situation in Karnataka, where the Congress, despite its intentions, struggled to fulfill its state election promises due to a lack of funds. The finance minister warned that adopting similar measures nationwide could risk placing India among the 'fragile five' economies, a significant setback from its current top-five global ranking.
The backdrop of Sitharaman's critique includes accusations from Prime Minister Narendra Modi against Congress, suggesting plans for wealth redistribution if elected. The BJP has positioned itself as questioning the Congress's economic strategies vigorously. Sitharaman emphasized that the BJP's response to the Congress manifesto is not defensive but rather offensive and substantive.
Furthermore, Sitharaman addressed allegations of misinformation spread by the BJP regarding the Congress's manifesto. She defended her party's stance by stating that questioning the opposition's policies is a fundamental aspect of political discourse. The finance minister also touched upon Rahul Gandhi's comments on conducting a caste census and its implications for wealth redistribution, indicating a discrepancy between Congress's written and spoken promises.
In contrast, the Congress has accused Prime Minister Modi of diverting attention from real issues by resorting to falsehoods. However, Sitharaman maintains that it is within the BJP's rights to set the election agenda and scrutinize the opposition's manifesto critically.
This discourse unfolds as India prepares for upcoming elections, with economic policies and manifesto promises at the forefront of political debates. The BJP and Congress continue to spar over their visions for India's future, each presenting differing approaches to governance and economic management.
