RCMP Alleges Indian Agents Utilised Various Entities in Canada for Information Gathering
On Monday, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) accused Indian agents of using various entities in Canada and abroad to gather information. This information was allegedly used to target the South Asian community. The RCMP's statement coincided with India's expulsion of six Canadian diplomats and the withdrawal of its High Commissioner from Canada. This action followed Ottawa's allegations linking an Indian envoy to the investigation into Sikh extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar's murder.

India has consistently denied any involvement in Nijjar's killing last year. The RCMP has been investigating this case, which has strained India-Canada relations. In September, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian agents of potential involvement in Nijjar's death, a claim New Delhi dismissed as absurd. India argues that Canada's leniency towards pro-Khalistani elements operating freely on its soil is the main issue.
Allegations and Investigations
The RCMP claims that Indian diplomats and consular officials in Canada have used their positions for covert activities. These activities include gathering information for the Indian government, either directly or through proxies. Some individuals were allegedly coerced into cooperating with these efforts. New Delhi has rejected these accusations against its diplomats and officials.
The RCMP further alleged that a range of entities in Canada and abroad were used by Indian agents to collect information. This data was reportedly used to target members of the South Asian community. Some businesses and individuals were allegedly threatened into working for the Indian government.
Efforts for Cooperation
The evidence gathered by the RCMP was presented to Indian officials, urging cooperation to curb violence. The RCMP expressed hope for collaboration with the Indian government and the National Investigation Agency to enhance safety and security for Canadians and the South Asian community.
"The safety and security of our citizens, regardless of their background or beliefs, remains a top priority for the RCMP," stated the police force. "We will not tolerate any form of intimidation, harassment, or harmful targeting of communities or individuals in Canada."
India's Stance
India maintains that its primary concern with Canada is the space provided to separatists, terrorists, and anti-India elements within the country. New Delhi has consistently dismissed charges against its diplomats as baseless.
The ongoing tensions between India and Canada highlight complex diplomatic challenges. Both nations are urged to engage in dialogue to address these issues effectively while ensuring community safety.
