India–UK Free Trade Deal: What Gets Cheaper For Indians After FTA Agreement?
India and the United Kingdom have inked a landmark Free Trade Agreement (FTA) that promises to reshape their economic ties and directly benefit Indian consumers. The deal aims to boost bilateral trade and bring a wave of premium British products to India at significantly lower prices.
99% of Indian Exports to Get Duty-Free Entry
A key highlight of the FTA is that nearly 99% of Indian exports will now enjoy duty-free access to the UK. In return, India will be slashing tariffs on a wide range of British goods, making everything from Scotch whisky to luxury cars more affordable for Indian buyers.

Scotch Whisky to Get Cheaper-Cheers to That!
One of the biggest winners under the deal is Scotch whisky, which currently faces a whopping 150% import duty in India. Under the new agreement, this will be halved to 75% immediately, with a further phased reduction bringing it down to just 40% over the next 10 years.
This move is expected to make premium British whiskies significantly more affordable and accessible to Indian consumers, particularly in the growing high-end spirits market.
Luxury Cars at Lower Prices
The FTA also brings good news for auto enthusiasts. India will allow high-end British cars like Jaguar Land Rover, Bentley, and Rolls-Royce to enter the market at a significantly reduced customs duty as low as 10%, compared to the current rate of over 100%.
These tariff cuts will be implemented under a quota-based system, with full details expected to be rolled out in the coming months. Nonetheless, the agreement marks a major shift that could make luxury vehicles more attainable for Indian buyers.
Cosmetics, Chocolates, and More to Get Price Cuts
It's not just big-ticket items-daily-use products from the UK are also set to become easier on the pocket. Tariffs on a range of goods like:
- Cosmetics and personal care items
- Chocolates and confectioneries
- Biscuits and beverages
will be significantly reduced, offering consumers more international choices at better prices.
Boost for Healthcare Tech
The FTA will also make advanced British medical devices and health-tech equipment more affordable for Indian hospitals and healthcare providers. With tariffs slashed, Indian consumers may benefit from wider access to specialised tools and modern medical technologies.
A Win-Win for Trade and Consumers
Overall, India will reduce or eliminate tariffs on about 90% of all British goods, with 85% of those becoming completely duty-free within a decade. This brings the average import duty down from 15% to just 3%, paving the way for a surge in trade and better value for Indian consumers.
From luxury cars and premium spirits to beauty products and healthcare tools, the FTA promises to enhance variety, affordability, and quality in the Indian market.
