India Successfully Foils Pakistan's Attempts to Strike Military Sites in Jammu and Pathankot Amid Rising Tensions
India successfully intercepted Pakistan's attempts to target military sites with drones and missiles, including in Jammu and Pathankot. This action followed similar thwarted efforts at 15 locations in the northern and western parts of the country. The situation has heightened tensions between the two nations, raising concerns about a broader conflict.

Pakistani forces intensified shelling along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan. This escalation came after India targeted Pakistani air defence systems in several cities, including Lahore. Earlier, Indian forces conducted precise missile strikes on nine terror targets in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) under 'Operation Sindoor'.
Military Response and Defence Measures
The Ministry of Defence (MoD) stated that any attack on Indian military sites would be met with a "suitable response". Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasised that Pakistan must decide if it wants to de-escalate tensions. This follows the initial escalation triggered by the Pahalgam massacre.
Blackouts were enforced in several cities across Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, and Rajasthan as drones were spotted from across the border. Pakistani-origin drones and missiles targeted military stations at Jammu, Pathankot, and Udhampur along the IB in J&K. These threats were neutralised using kinetic and non-kinetic capabilities, according to a late-night MoD statement.
International Reactions and Diplomatic Efforts
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio engaged separately with External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. He stressed the need for de-escalation and urged Pakistan to take concrete steps against terrorist groups. Jaishankar assured Rubio that India would firmly counter any attempts by Pakistan to escalate the situation.
US President Donald Trump expressed his desire for India and Pakistan to cease "tit for tat" actions. He offered assistance if needed. Meanwhile, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh informed an all-party meeting that at least 100 hardcore terrorists were killed in Indian strikes.
Impact on Civilians and Further Developments
A sudden power outage plunged Jammu city into darkness following two loud explosions, likely from intercepted drones. Sirens blared throughout the city, prompting residents to seek shelter. Massive explosions were also heard in Jaisalmer, leading to a blackout in western Rajasthan districts bordering Pakistan.
The MoD reported that on May 7-8 night, Pakistan attempted to engage military targets in various locations including Awantipura, Srinagar, Jammu, Pathankot, Amritsar, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Ludhiana, Adampur, Bhatinda, Chandigarh, Nal, Phalodi, Uttarlai, and Bhuj. These attempts were neutralised by India's Integrated Counter Unmanned Aircraft System Grid and Air Defence systems.
Continued Military Engagements
The S-400 missile defence systems and surface-to-air missiles were deployed to counter Pakistani attempts. Debris from these attacks is being recovered from multiple locations as evidence of Pakistani strikes. The MoD reiterated that any attack on Indian military targets would invite a suitable response.
India's response included targeting air defence radars and systems at several locations in Pakistan. The ministry stated that India's actions matched Pakistan's intensity. An air defence system in Lahore was reportedly neutralised during India's response involving kamikaze drones.
Statements from Both Sides
In Islamabad, Pakistan Army spokesman Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry claimed Indian drones were neutralised in Lahore and other cities. He reported one drone crashed near Lahore injuring four soldiers. An official mentioned at least four drones hit Lahore cantonment area.
The MoD noted increased unprovoked firing by Pakistan across the LoC using mortars and heavy artillery in areas like Kupwara, Baramulla, Uri, Poonch, Mendhar, and Rajouri sectors in J&K. Sixteen civilians lost their lives due to Pakistani firing.
Retaliatory Actions Following Pahalgam Attack
In retaliation for the Pahalgam massacre where 26 people died on April 22, Indian forces conducted missile strikes on terror targets including Bahawalpur. Jaishankar reiterated India's lack of intent to escalate but warned of firm responses to military attacks.
At a National Quality Conclave event in 2025, Rajnath Singh praised 'Operation Sindoor' for its precision but did not specify terrorist casualties. Misri highlighted that escalation began with Pakistan's Pahalgam attack while India only responded.
The retaliatory actions by Pakistan have impacted civilians along the LoC in J&K. Misri stated that de-escalation is up to Pakistan as India only responded to provocations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi chaired a high-level meeting with ministry secretaries urging continued alertness and clear communication while reaffirming commitment to national security.
