India Sees Early Monsoon Coverage; IMD Marks Nationwide Onset By June 29

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) announced on Sunday, June 29, 2025, that the southwest monsoon has now covered the entire country-nearly nine days earlier than the normal expected date of July 8.

After a brief lull earlier in the season, the monsoon regained pace over the past week, advancing rapidly through most of northwest India, including the national capital, Delhi, by June 25. The IMD confirmed that as of June 29, all meteorological subdivisions across India have received monsoon rainfall, making this one of the earlier arrivals in recent years.

The early onset of monsoon is expected to bring significant benefits across various sectors. In agriculture, timely rains are likely to support sowing activities and early crop development, particularly in regions that rely heavily on monsoon-dependent farming. Additionally, the rains will help recharge groundwater levels and replenish reservoirs, which are critical for drinking water supply and irrigation needs.

The IMD emphasized that it will continue to monitor monsoon activity and issue regular forecasts to keep the public informed about rainfall distribution, intensity, and any potential extreme weather events.

This year's early monsoon arrival is viewed as a positive development for the country's agriculture and water management systems. However, continuous monitoring and preparedness remain essential to address any challenges that may emerge from evolving weather patterns.
