India Sees 21% Rise In 'Spiritual Tourism', Driven By Maha Kumbh 2025
India has seen a remarkable 21.4% increase in inbound travel for spiritual purposes, according to the latest figures from Atlys, a prominent visa processing platform.
This rise is primarily driven by major religious events such as the Maha Kumbh and other significant festivals, which draw millions of tourists each year, reported the Times of India.

Nearly 48% of all spiritual travel visa applications are associated with large-scale religious events and pilgrimages, with the ongoing Maha Kumbh being a key highlight.
Maha Kumbh Mela and tourism boost
As one of the world's largest religious gatherings, the Maha Kumbh, which occurs once every 12 years, is expected to attract around 42 million pilgrims.
This exceptional event provides a unique opportunity for both domestic and international visitors to experience India's rich spiritual heritage.
The growth in spiritual tourism is also being fuelled by rising interest from countries like the US and the UK, with many seeking genuine, transformative experiences.
Women, who account for 66% of millennial spiritual travellers, are at the forefront of this shift. Young people, in particular, are choosing spiritually enriching vacations over traditional sightseeing, marking a notable change in travel trends.
Another emerging trend is the increasing popularity of group travel in spiritual tourism. Applications for group spiritual travel have grown by 35%, as more visitors look to connect with like-minded individuals while engaging in customs and rituals at sacred sites.
With events like the Maha Kumbh attracting record crowds and a growing global interest in its spiritual significance, India is solidifying its status as a top destination for spiritual tourism.
The combination of enhanced infrastructure and evolving travel patterns ensures that India will remain a leading hub for spiritual journeys in the years to come.
