India-Pakistan SAARC Visas Suspended, Pakistani Nationals In India To Leave In 48 Hours

In response to the Pahalgam terror attack, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced that Pakistan nationals are now barred from entering India under the SAARC Visa Exemption Scheme (SVES). Misri clarified that any SVES visas previously granted to Pakistani citizens are now considered void. This decision restricts travel and signifies a tightening of entry regulations for Pakistani nationals into India.

In addition, Misri revealed a series of measures affecting diplomatic and military personnel between the two nations. Specifically, the staff strength at the High Commissions will be reduced to 30 from the current 55 by May 1, 2025. This decision reflects a further decrease in the diplomatic footprint between the two countries.

Immediate Closure of Integrated Check Post Attari

The closure of the Integrated Check Post Attari was also decreed by Misri to take effect immediately. However, individuals who have already crossed over using this checkpoint with valid documentation are permitted to return via the same route before May 1, 2025. This closure is part of India's broader strategy to control movement across its border with Pakistan.

Withdrawal and Expulsion of Defence Personnel

Misri further stated that India would withdraw its Defence, Navy, and Air Advisors from its High Commission in Islamabad. Concurrently, the Defence, Military, Naval, and Air Advisors stationed at the Pakistani High Commission in New Delhi have been declared Persona Non Grata and are required to leave India within a week. This move underscores the escalating tensions between the two countries, impacting their military engagements.

Suspending the Indus Waters Treaty

Misri also announced the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty of 1960, effective immediately. This suspension will remain until Pakistan "credibly and irrevocably abjures its support for cross-border terrorism." The treaty, a cornerstone of India-Pakistan water-sharing arrangements, faces uncertainty amid these increased tensions.

Pakistani nationals currently in India on a SAARC visa have been given a 48-hour deadline to exit the country, as per Misri's statement. This directive is part of a broader set of measures that reflect the strained relations between India and Pakistan, underscoring the serious stance India is taking against what it perceives as support for cross-border terrorism from its neighbor.
