BJP Leaders Celebrate 'Historic' Passage of Women's Reservation Bill; Opposition Raises Questions on Minority & OBC Representation
The passage of the women’s reservation bill in Lok Sabha has been hailed as a historic moment by top BJP leaders. However, opposition members have raised concerns about representation for women from OBC and minority communities. Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur criticized Congress leader Sonia Gandhi for her absence during voting.
On the 20th of September, top BJP leaders and Union ministers celebrated the passage of the women's reservation bill in Lok Sabha. This significant event was hailed as a historic moment for Indian politics and society at large. However, opposition members expressed their hopes that women from OBC (Other Backward Class) and minority communities will also eventually receive their due share.
The Journey Towards Women's Empowerment

Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur pointed out that although parties had previously introduced bills to provide reservation to women, they were never successful in getting them passed. He commended the Modi government for ensuring its passage this time around. In his speech, he raised a question about Sonia Gandhi's absence during voting and asked where those MPs were who could have been part of this historic moment.
Thakur extended his thanks to all MPs and political parties who supported the bill in Lok Sabha. He further expressed hope that it would be unanimously passed in Rajya Sabha as well.
A Milestone Achieved
In her remarks on this landmark achievement, Union minister Smriti Irani compared it to a festival for millions of Indian women. She stated that with its passage from Lok Sabha within just one day, Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam has crossed its first milestone - an accomplishment she attributed largely to Prime Minister Modi's leadership.
Irani criticized those who opposed the bill by suggesting they probably still questioned women’s capabilities despite such progress being made towards gender equality. She concluded by expressing gratitude towards everyone involved in passing this transformative legislation.
Conclusion
This development marks a significant step forward in India’s journey towards gender equality and empowerment of women. The passing of the Women’s Reservation Bill is not just a victory for women, but also a testament to the changing dynamics of Indian politics. However, there is still work to be done as opposition members rightly pointed out the need for adequate representation of women from OBC and minority communities.
The absence of some MPs during this historic moment raises questions about their commitment towards gender equality. Nevertheless, the overwhelming support and swift passage of this bill reflect a growing recognition in Indian society about the importance of equal representation and empowerment of women. It is hoped that such landmark legislation will pave the way for more inclusive and equitable governance in India.
