India, Maldives Find Common Ground: Aviation Platforms to Continue Operations
India and Maldives have found a middle ground, agreeing on a set of workable solutions to maintain the operations of Indian aviation platforms in the Maldives. This development comes after Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzus request for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel from the island nation.
India and the Maldives have reached an agreement on a set of mutually workable solutions to ensure the continued operation of Indian aviation platforms in the island nation. This development comes in response to Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu's call for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives by March 15.

High-Level Meeting in Delhi
A high-level meeting between the two countries was held in Delhi to address the contentious issue. Following the meeting, the Maldivian foreign ministry announced that India will replace its military personnel operating the three aviation platforms in the Maldives by May 10. The first phase of this process will be completed by March 10.
Replacement of Military Personnel
According to the statement released by the Maldivian foreign ministry, the government of India will replace the military personnel in one of the three aviation platforms by March 10 and complete the replacement process in the other two platforms by May 10.
Humanitarian and Medical Evacuation Services
Both India and the Maldives emphasized the importance of the Indian aviation platforms in providing humanitarian and medical evacuation services to the people of the Maldives. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) of India stated that the two sides agreed on a set of mutually workable solutions to enable the continued operation of these platforms.
Wide-Ranging Bilateral Cooperation
During the meeting, the two sides also discussed a wide range of issues related to bilateral cooperation. They explored steps to enhance the partnership, including expediting the implementation of ongoing development cooperation projects.
Next Meeting of the Core Group
It was agreed that the next meeting of the high-level core group would be held in Male on a mutually convenient date.
Current Indian Military Presence
At present, around 80 Indian military personnel are stationed in the Maldives to operate two helicopters and an aircraft. These platforms have been involved in numerous medical evacuations and humanitarian missions in the country.
Potential Replacement by Civilians
It is understood that the Indian military personnel could be replaced by civilians who possess the necessary expertise to operate the three aviation platforms.
Strained Ties
The relationship between India and the Maldives has experienced some strain since Muizzu assumed power in November 2022. Muizzu had pledged during his election campaign to evict Indian military personnel from the country.
Bilateral Ties Under Previous Government
Under the previous government in Male, the overall bilateral ties between India and the Maldives, particularly in the areas of defense and security, had witnessed a positive trajectory.
Muizzu's Call for Withdrawal
Muizzu was sworn in as the new Maldivian president on November 17, 2022. A day after taking office, he called for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives.
Previous Core Group Meeting
The first meeting of the core group was held on January 14, during which both sides expressed their intention to find a mutually workable solution to ensure the continued operation of Indian aviation platforms providing humanitarian and medical evacuation services.
The agreement reached between India and the Maldives on the continued operation of Indian aviation platforms demonstrates the commitment of both countries to maintaining strong bilateral ties and cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
