India logs 12,591 fresh Covid cases, 20% higher than yesterday

India logged 12,591 fresh COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours, 20 per cent higher than yesterday. The death toll has increased to 5,31,230 with 40 fatalities, which includes 11 reconciled by Kerala, according to heath ministry data.

India's active caseload currently stands at 65,286 - 0.14% percent of the total cases.

The daily positivity rate was 5.46 percent and the weekly positivity rate was 5.32 percent. Active cases now comprise 0.15 percent of the total infections, while the national COVID-19 recovery rate was 98.67 percent, according to the health ministry website.

The number of people who have recuperated from the disease has surged to 4,42,61, 476 while the case fatality rate was recorded at 1.18 percent. According to the ministry's website, 220.66 crore doses of Covid vaccine have been administered in the country so far under the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination drive.

Experts have said Omicron sub-variant XBB.1.16 could be driving the surge in cases.

India has been witnessing a rapid increase in the number of Covid-19 cases with majority of cases being reported in 8 states Kerala, Delhi, Maharashtra, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Rajasthan.

Dr. P.K. Mishra Principal Secretary to Prime Minister stressed that the time tested 5-fold strategy of Test-Track-Treat-Vaccination & adherence COVID Appropriate Behaviour must continue to be implemented and equally crucial to promote awareness within community regarding COVID appropriate behaviour and caution citizens against complacency.

He advised officials to maintain a strict vigil on the Covid-19 situation and take necessary actions to contain the COVID-19 spread.
