India launches Operation Ajay to facilitate return of Indians from Israel

On Wednesday, October 11th, the Indian government announced Operation Ajay - a mission to facilitate the return of Indians from Israel amidst escalating tensions in the region. First Batch To Return Soon

Following this announcement, it is expected that the first batch of Indians will be brought back home from Israel via a special flight scheduled for Thursday. The Indian embassy in Israel has already begun communication with registered Indian citizens about their travel details. Messages regarding subsequent flights will continue to be sent out accordingly. It is estimated that there are currently around 18,000 Indians residing in Israel.

The Crisis at Hand

The ongoing crisis began with multi-pronged attacks against Israel by Hamas militants from Gaza since Saturday. The ensuing Israeli retaliation has resulted in approximately 2150 deaths so far; including more than 1,200 people and 155 soldiers within Israeli territory alone while Palestinian authorities report death tolls reaching up to 950 individuals inside Gaza.

In light of this situation, Minister Jaishankar held talks with his UAE counterpart Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan discussing the crisis in West Asia. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has set up a 24/7 control room in Delhi and separate emergency helplines in Tel Aviv and Ramallah to monitor the situation and provide information and assistance to Indian citizens. In addition, the Indian embassy in Israel issued an advisory asking Indians to remain cautious given the current circumstances.
