India Alters Its Approach to Terrorism Under New Foreign Policy, Says Jaishankar
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar recently highlighted a significant shift in India's foreign policy approach, particularly in dealing with terrorism, since 2014. Speaking at an event titled "Why Bharat Matters: Opportunity for youth and participation in global scenario," Jaishankar emphasized the evolved stance of India towards terrorism and its impact on diplomatic relations, especially with neighboring countries.

During the interaction, when questioned about the challenges in maintaining relationships with certain countries, Jaishankar pointed out Pakistan's role in promoting terrorism, especially referencing the 1947 conflict over Kashmir. He critiqued past actions where India, instead of highlighting Pakistan's use of terrorism, approached the United Nations discussing tribal invasions. "If we, from the very start, were clear that Pakistan is using terrorism, then we would have had a very different policy," Jaishankar stated, underscoring that terrorism is inexcusable under any circumstances.
Policy Continuity and Change
Jaishankar also addressed inquiries about the continuity of India's foreign policy. He acknowledged a balanced mix of continuity and change, with a significant shift being the approach towards terrorism. Reflecting on past incidents like the Mumbai attacks on 26/11, he highlighted a change in perception regarding retaliatory actions against terrorism. The minister argued that failing to respond to such attacks could potentially embolden terrorists, emphasizing that terrorists should not feel invulnerable due to international borders.
The minister's remarks shed light on India's firm stance against terrorism and its readiness to take decisive actions if necessary. This approach marks a pivotal change in India's foreign policy dynamics, aiming to ensure national security and foster a safer regional environment.
Jaishankar's insights into India's foreign policy adjustments since 2014 reveal a strategic pivot towards more assertive counter-terrorism measures. This shift reflects India's commitment to addressing security challenges head-on, ensuring that acts of terrorism do not undermine its sovereignty or regional stability.
