India Expels Six Canadian Diplomats and Withdraws High Commissioner Amid Rising Tensions

India has expelled six Canadian diplomats and recalled its high commissioner from Canada. This move follows Ottawa's allegations linking the Indian envoy to an investigation into the killing of Sikh extremist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Relations between the two countries have worsened significantly due to these developments.

India Withdraws Officials and Expels Diplomats

Diplomatic Tensions Escalate

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned Canadian Charge d'Affaires Stewart Wheeler, expressing strong disapproval of the accusations against Indian officials. The MEA stated that such baseless targeting is unacceptable. In response, India has asked six Canadian diplomats, including Wheeler and Deputy High Commissioner Patrick Hebert, to leave by October 19.

The Washington Post reported that Canada ordered six Indian diplomats, including High Commissioner Sanjay Verma, to leave. New Delhi has dismissed Canada's allegations as politically motivated and absurd. The MEA highlighted that these claims are part of a political agenda driven by vote bank politics in Canada.

Allegations and Reactions

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had previously accused Indian agents of involvement in Nijjar's killing in June last year. India rejected these claims as unfounded. The MEA noted that despite repeated requests, Canada has not provided any evidence supporting its allegations against India.

The MEA also criticised Trudeau's past interference in Indian internal matters, referencing his comments during the farmers' protests in December 2020. It accused his government of pandering to anti-India separatist agendas for political gain.

Security Concerns and Diplomatic Actions

India expressed concerns about the safety of its diplomats in Canada, citing an atmosphere of extremism and violence. The MEA stated it has no confidence in the Canadian government's commitment to ensuring their security. Consequently, India decided to withdraw its high commissioner and other targeted officials.

The MEA warned that India reserves the right to take further steps if necessary. It accused the Trudeau government of supporting extremism and separatism against India, which has led to threats against Indian diplomats and community leaders.

Background on Diplomatic Strain

Relations between India and Canada have been strained since Trudeau's allegations last year. The MEA mentioned that Trudeau's visit to India in 2018 aimed at gaining favour with a vote bank but resulted in discomfort for him. His cabinet includes individuals associated with extremist agendas regarding India.

The MEA criticised Canada's disregard for multiple extradition requests concerning terrorists and organised crime leaders residing there. It also highlighted that some individuals who entered Canada illegally were fast-tracked for citizenship.

High Commissioner Verma is India's most senior diplomat with a distinguished career spanning 36 years. He has served as Ambassador in Japan and Sudan, among other countries. The MEA described Canada's aspersions on him as ludicrous and deserving of contempt.

India remains vigilant about activities at the Canadian High Commission in India that align with the current regime's political agenda. Last week, Prime Minister Narendra Modi briefly interacted with Trudeau during the East Asia Summit in Laos.
