India to Construct 2 Crore More Rural Houses Under PM Awas Yojana
The Union Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has approved the Department of Rural Development's proposal to construct an additional two crore houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana - Gramin (PMAY-G). This decision was made on Friday and will extend the scheme from FY 2024-25 to 2028-29.

The scheme aims to build two crore more houses with existing unit assistance of Rs 1.20 lakh in plain areas and Rs 1.30 lakh in North Eastern Region States and Hill States such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Union Territories like Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. An official statement confirmed this approval.
Financial Outlay for PMAY-G
The total financial outlay for this period is Rs 3,06,137 crore. This includes a central share of Rs 2,05,856 crore and a states' share of Rs 1,00,281 crore. The continuation of the scheme from April 2024 to March 2029 has been sanctioned.
Houses that remain incomplete from the previous phase of PMAY-G as of March 31 this year will also be finished during FY 2024-25 at the existing rates. This initiative is expected to benefit nearly 10 crore individuals.
Ensuring Safety and Inclusiveness
The approval aims to help houseless individuals and those living in dilapidated or kutcha houses to construct safe, secure homes with basic amenities. This will enhance safety, hygiene, and social inclusiveness for the beneficiaries.
The central government launched PMAY-G in April 2016 with a goal of constructing 2.95 crore houses with basic amenities by March 2024. The new approval continues this mission to achieve Housing for All in rural areas.
The initiative underscores the government's commitment to improving living conditions in rural India by providing quality housing solutions.
