India and EU Strengthen Cooperation on Smart and Sustainable Urbanisation Initiatives

The 4th India-EU Urban Forum took place on Thursday, advancing the partnership for sustainable urbanisation established in 2017. This event marked a key moment in the collaboration between India and the European Union on urban development. Officials and experts from both regions gathered to discuss policies and best practices aimed at integrated approaches to sustainable urban growth, aligning with the EU's global gateway strategy in India.

India-EU Cooperation on Urban Sustainability

Focus on Sustainable Urban Development

The forum delved into transformative initiatives and innovative financing methods to promote gender-inclusive, resilient, and sustainable urban development. Discussions centred around three main themes: forming urban alliances and integrated approaches in Indian cities, fostering innovation and circularity at the city level, and enhancing inclusive urban mobility as a social enabler. These themes were highlighted by the Union Housing and Urban Affairs Ministry.

Urban areas are significant contributors to global energy consumption, emissions, and pollution, accounting for two-thirds of these factors. Since 2017, the India-EU partnership has played a vital role in promoting sustainable city models, encouraging public-private investments, climate action, and disaster risk reduction. The collaboration is crucial for addressing these challenges effectively.

EU-India Cooperation in Urban Development

Herve Delphin, Ambassador of the EU Delegation to India, emphasised the importance of EU-India cooperation in urban development. He noted that since 2017, the EU has been actively supporting India's efforts in planning the development of its cities. Delphin stated, "Smart and sustainable urbanisation has been at the core of our partnership: to improve the eco-design of cities; to improve waste disposal, to improve water recycling; to facilitate urban mobility with financing of metros."

Team Europe has collaborated with over 40 Indian municipalities, enhancing their understanding of climate-smart development. This includes supporting urban mobility solutions, waste management, and climate action planning. Such efforts have been instrumental in advancing sustainable urbanisation across Indian cities.

Financial Commitment to Urbanisation

The EU has committed over €45 million (INR 400 crores), leveraging more than €1 billion (INR 9000 crores) in capital to support sustainable urbanisation efforts. This financial commitment is set to continue from 2025 to 2027. The focus remains on improving eco-designs of cities, waste management practices, water recycling processes, and facilitating urban mobility through metro financing.

Srinivas Katikithala, Secretary of Housing and Urban Affairs (HUA), highlighted India's dedication to urban innovation during the forum. He stated that Indian cities are adopting smart solutions, constructing green infrastructure, and implementing inclusive policies for sustainable urbanisation that will benefit future generations.

India's commitment to smart solutions and green infrastructure is evident as it embraces inclusive policies for sustainable urbanisation. The ongoing collaboration with the EU aims to create resilient cities that can tackle environmental challenges while fostering economic growth and social inclusion.
