India, China Hold 20th Round Of Military Talks Amid Border Standoff
The 20th round of India-China Corps Commander-level talks took place on Wednesday at the Chushul-Moldo border meeting point on the Indian side. During this significant engagement, both sides engaged in a candid, open, and constructive dialogue with the aim of achieving an early and mutually agreeable resolution to the outstanding issues along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) in the Western Sector.
Their discussions were guided by the directives provided by the national leadership of both countries, and they sought to build upon the advancements made during the preceding Corps Commander Meeting held on August 13-14, 2023.

A key outcome of these talks was the mutual commitment to sustain the momentum of dialogue and negotiations through the relevant military and diplomatic channels. Additionally, both sides expressed their dedication to preserving peace and tranquility on the ground in the border regions during the interim period.
Notably, this marked the second consecutive two-day engagement between military commanders, underscoring the gravity and importance of the ongoing discussions.
It's essential to recognize that these military-level talks constitute one of the two parallel tracks employed by India and China to address the persistent military standoff. The other track involves the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on India-China Border Affairs (WMCC), which involves diplomats and other officials.
The prolonged standoff and a tragic clash in the Galwan Valley in June 2020, resulting in the loss of 20 Indian soldiers and at least four Chinese troops, have strained bilateral relations to their lowest point in six decades. Despite numerous rounds of military and diplomatic dialogues, both sides withdrew their frontline forces from locations such as Pangong Lake, Gogra, and Hot Springs. However, substantial challenges persist in resolving the larger "friction points" at Depsang and Demchok. Moreover, buffer zones established by both countries have impacted Indian troops' access to areas they previously patrolled. The situation remains a complex and multifaceted issue, requiring continuous efforts towards resolution.
