India, China Seek to Resolve Eastern Ladakh Border Dispute Through Diplomatic Talks
India and China engaged in diplomatic discussions on Thursday to address the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) described these talks as frank, constructive, and forward-looking. The 31st meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC) on India-China Border Affairs took place in Beijing.

Focus on Peace and Tranquillity
During the meeting, both sides emphasised that restoring peace and tranquillity along the LAC is crucial for normalising bilateral relations. They reiterated that respect for the LAC is essential. The discussions aimed to narrow differences and find early resolutions to outstanding issues.
The Indian delegation was led by Gourangalal Das, Joint Secretary East Asia from the MEA. Hong Liang, Director General of the Boundary and Ocean Affairs Department of the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, headed the Chinese delegation. Both sides agreed to maintain intensified contact through diplomatic and military channels.
Commitment to Bilateral Agreements
The two countries decided to uphold peace and tranquillity in border areas according to relevant bilateral agreements, protocols, and understandings. The MEA statement highlighted this commitment. Additionally, the leader of the Indian delegation met with a vice-minister in the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The 30th WMCC meeting occurred in New Delhi on July 31. Since May 2020, Indian and Chinese militaries have been in a standoff. Although disengagement has happened at several friction points, a full resolution remains elusive. The Galwan Valley clash in June 2020 significantly strained relations.
Chinese Foreign Ministry's Readout
China's foreign ministry also issued a readout after the talks, describing the atmosphere as positive, friendly, and frank. According to a rough English translation, both sides exchanged in-depth views to narrow differences and expand consensus. They agreed to strengthen dialogue and consultation.
The readout mentioned that both countries would take care of each other's reasonable concerns and seek an acceptable solution soon. They also agreed to consolidate consultation results, strictly adhere to border-related agreements, and continue maintaining peace in border areas.
Both nations committed to promoting an early resolution of the border situation based on recent consensus reached by their foreign ministers. This agreement aims to build on previous discussions held last month.
The talks reflect ongoing efforts by India and China to address border tensions diplomatically. The focus remains on restoring normalcy while respecting mutual concerns and agreements.
