India Braces For Extreme Winter: States May Drop To 3°C—What You Need To Know
India is preparing for a severe winter due to the La Niña phenomenon, as predicted by the IMD.
India is preparing for a severe winter due to the La Niña phenomenon, as predicted by the IMD. The IMD has indicated that the La Niña phenomenon, which began in September 2024, will lead to a significant drop in temperatures and increased rainfall across the country.
La Niña, known for its cooler sea surface temperatures in the equatorial, often results in colder and harsher winters.

The IMD's announcement on September 2, 2024, highlighted that La Niña is expected to bring a severe winter. Typically starting between April and June, La Niña strengthens from October to February and can last from nine months to two years. It is driven by strong easterly winds pushing ocean waters westward, cooling the ocean surface. This contrasts with El Niño, which brings warmer conditions.
Impact on Different Regions
Various regions in India will experience different levels of winter severity. Northern states such as Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Jammu and Kashmir may face particularly cold conditions, with temperatures potentially dropping to 3°C. The combination of colder weather and increased rainfall could also affect agriculture, especially in areas dependent on winter crops.
La Niña's influence is already evident with the 2024 monsoon season extending beyond its usual end in September. This delayed retreat is linked to ocean cooling, disrupting typical weather patterns and bringing heavier rainfall to southern and central India.
Global Climate Shifts
Globally, La Niña is associated with various climate shifts. These include heightened hurricane activity in the Atlantic, droughts in parts of South America, and wetter conditions in Southeast Asia and Australia. This underscores the widespread impacts of La Niña on global weather systems.
The IMD has advised citizens to prepare for the upcoming winter by ensuring adequate heating, stocking essential supplies, and staying updated on weather reports. The government is also expected to implement measures to minimize the effects, especially in vulnerable regions.
The IMD is closely monitoring the situation and will continue issuing updates and advisories. Their predictions are based on comprehensive data analysis, including ocean temperatures, wind patterns, and historical climate trends.
The approaching winter will pose challenges for many communities across India. Rural and remote areas might face significant difficulties due to colder temperatures and increased rainfall. However, with timely preparation and accurate information, these impacts can be managed effectively.
