INDIA Bloc In Crisis: Key Meeting Seeks To Mend Seat-Sharing Discord And Choose Leader
Amidst uncertainties surrounding Opposition unity in several states arising from seat-sharing negotiations, the I.N.D.I.A bloc is set to conduct virtual discussions today (January 13) to reinforce the alliance. The primary objective is to formulate a strategy for contesting seats nationwide in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. High-ranking leaders from various parties will deliberate on the potential appointment of a convenor within the grouping, with TMC chief Mamata Banerjee opting to abstain from the Zoom meeting scheduled for around 11:30 am, citing prior commitments.
Mamata's disagreement with the Congress over seat-sharing in West Bengal has led to a contentious exchange between TMC and Congress leaders recently.

The meeting's agenda includes deliberations on selecting a convenor for the Opposition alliance. Notably, there is speculation surrounding Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's candidacy for the role, as his party, JDU, supports him, emphasizing his pivotal role in bringing Opposition parties together last year. However, TMC opposes this idea.
This marks the second attempt to hold a virtual meeting, as a previous effort a few days ago did not materialize, according to sources.
The party received notification of the meeting on Friday evening, and due to prior commitments, Mamata is expected to be absent. TMC has suggested rescheduling the meeting for the following week, reiterating its commitment to the I.N.D.I.A bloc and its resolve to confront the BJP.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, in a post on 'X,' announced that I.N.D.I.A party leaders would convene over Zoom at 11:30 am on January 13, 2024. He highlighted that the meeting would address various issues, including ongoing seat-sharing talks, participation in the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra starting from Thoubal near Imphal in two days, and other crucial matters.
The I.N.D.I.A bloc comprises 28 opposition parties united under the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance, aiming to challenge and defeat the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Nevertheless, unresolved issues persist within the alliance, notably the appointment of a convenor. Seat-sharing negotiations with opposition bloc members, particularly in West Bengal and Punjab, have encountered challenges, with conflicting claims and counterclaims, including AAP's assertion of winning all 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab.
