India's abstention from UN resolution on Gaza truce shocking, shows subservience to US: CPI, CPIM
CPI and CPIM have condemned India's abstention from voting on a UN resolution calling for a truce in Gaza, terming it as shocking and a sign of India's subservience to US imperialism.
New Delhi: India's abstention from voting on a United Nations resolution calling for a truce in Gaza has drawn strong condemnation from left parties in India. The Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPIM) issued a joint statement on Saturday, expressing shock and disappointment over India's stand on the issue.
'India Subordinate Ally of US Imperialism'

The statement, titled "Stop this Genocidal Aggression in Gaza," said that India's abstention negates its longstanding support for the Palestinian cause. It further accused India of shaping its foreign policy as a subordinate ally of US imperialism and consolidating the US-Israel-India nexus. The parties said that India's abstention on the resolution, which was overwhelmingly adopted by the UN General Assembly, shows the extent to which Indian foreign policy is being shaped by its subservience to US imperialism.
AIFB Condemns India's Stand
The All India Forward Bloc (AIFB) also condemned India's abstention from voting on the resolution. In a statement, the AIFB said that India's action is indicative of a deviation from its stated policy on Palestine and excessive US servitude. The party noted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had earlier openly supported Israeli military operations, which is completely contrary to India's previous positions on the issue.
CPI-M to Stage Protest
The Communist Party of India (Marxist) will stage a protest at its A K G Bhavan office in New Delhi on Sunday to express solidarity with Palestine. The protest will be attended by members of the party's Central Committee and politburo. The CPI-M's decision to stage the protest was taken in an ongoing session of its Central Committee.
Resolution Overwhelmingly Adopted
The UN General Assembly, in a resumed 10th Emergency Special Session, voted on a draft resolution submitted by Jordan and co-sponsored by more than 40 countries, including Bangladesh, the Maldives, Pakistan, Russia, and South Africa. The resolution was adopted with 120 countries voting in its favor, 14 against it, and 45 abstaining. Besides India, the countries that abstained from voting included Australia, Canada, Germany, Japan, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom.
India's abstention from voting on the UN resolution calling for a truce in Gaza has sparked outrage among left parties in the country. The parties have accused India of abandoning its longstanding support for the Palestinian cause and becoming a subordinate ally of US imperialism. They have demanded that India immediately reverse its stand and support the resolution.
