In Pics: PM Modi Inaugurates 6.5 km Z-Morh Tunnel, Boosting J&K Connectivity!

On January 13, 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the much-anticipated Z-Morh Tunnel, a 6.5 km engineering marvel in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ganderbal district. This tunnel, a crucial part of the Srinagar-Leh National Highway, ensures that the scenic town of Sonamarg remains accessible year-round, a move set to boost tourism, enhance defence logistics, and revolutionize connectivity to Ladakh.

A Historic Leap for Infrastructure & Defence

The grand event saw the presence of key dignitaries, including Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, and Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha. PM Modi lauded the engineers and workers who braved extreme conditions to complete the tunnel, emphasizing its dual impact—strengthening national security and unlocking economic potential in the region.

Positioned at an altitude of 8,650 feet, the Z-Morh Tunnel is not just a passage but a lifeline—one that guarantees uninterrupted access to strategic defence locations like Ladakh and Baltal while providing an all-weather route for civilians.

Transforming Sonamarg into a Year-Round Tourist Hub

Sonamarg, often cut off during harsh winters, is now poised to flourish as a winter tourism hotspot. With the tunnel bypassing avalanche-prone areas, travelers can now safely and seamlessly visit this breathtaking valley throughout the year. Hotels, businesses, and local artisans are expected to thrive, ushering in a new era of economic growth.

Safety & Speed: A Technological Marvel

Equipped with a 7.5-metre-wide emergency escape passage, the tunnel prioritizes passenger safety. The inclusion of a third lane for smoother traffic flow will also reduce congestion, making travel safer and faster. Additionally, the Z-Morh Tunnel cuts the travel distance from 49 km to 43 km and boosts vehicle speeds from 30 km/h to 70 km/h, significantly improving travel efficiency.

Paving the Way for Zojila Tunnel & Future Growth

The Z-Morh Tunnel is just the beginning. The upcoming Zojila Tunnel, slated for completion by 2028, will provide an uninterrupted Srinagar-Ladakh corridor, further reinforcing India’s strategic and economic foothold in the region.

CM Omar Abdullah emphasized how these projects would reduce travel time to Kargil and Leh, ensuring better connectivity, increased trade, and socio-cultural integration. Once a logistical challenge, the dream of an all-weather link to Ladakh is now closer to reality.

A Milestone for Jammu & Kashmir’s Future

From defence operations to tourism, from economic upliftment to national security, the Z-Morh Tunnel is a game-changer. It sets the stage for a more connected, prosperous, and strategically secure Jammu and Kashmir, promising unprecedented growth opportunities for locals, tourists, and the armed forces alike.

With this historic infrastructure upgrade, the region is not just embracing development—it’s stepping into a new era of progress and possibilities!
