In Orbit Now: Axiom-4 Crew Led by Shubhanshu Shukla Heads for ISS Docking
The Axiom-4 mission, carrying Indian Air Force Group Captain and ISRO astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, is scheduled to dock at the International Space Station (ISS) today, June 26, marking a major milestone for private spaceflight and Indo-US space collaboration.

The Ax-4 crew launched into orbit on June 25 aboard SpaceX's Dragon spacecraft, powered by a Falcon-9 rocket from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. After several weeks of delays and rescheduling, the mission is now on track, with docking expected at 7 AM EST (4:30 PM IST).
Axiom-4 Crew and Docking Timeline
Alongside pilot Shubhanshu Shukla, the Ax-4 crew includes:
Commander Peggy Whitson (USA)
Mission Specialist Sawosz Uznaski-Winiewski (Poland)
Mission Specialist Tibor Kapu (Hungary)
As pilot, Shukla-nicknamed 'Shux' by the team-will oversee the critical docking phase, ensuring alignment with the ISS's orbital trajectory and movement. The autonomous docking will occur at the space-facing port of the Harmony module, as confirmed by NASA, Axiom Space, and SpaceX.
Scientific Goals of the 14-Day Mission
Once docked, the Axiom-4 team will begin a 14-day mission conducting over 60 microgravity experiments aboard the ISS. Shubhanshu Shukla is assigned to perform seven key experiments, contributing to the mission's broader scientific objectives.
The mission also features a significant collaboration between NASA and ISRO, including:
Five joint science investigations
Two in-orbit STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) demonstrations
This partnership underscores India's growing presence in space exploration, with Shukla representing ISRO in one of the most advanced commercial space missions to date.
