In Meghalaya, Tripura, Nagaland, 69 candidates have pending criminal cases
Elections have concluded in Tripura, but are still pending in Meghalaya and Nagaland. Counting of votes for all these states will be held on March 2 2023
Out of the 818 candidates contesting the elections in Meghalaya, Tripura and Nagaland, 69 have pending criminal cases against them.
The National Election Watch and Association of Democratic Reforms (ADR) have analysed the self-sworn affidavits of all 818 candidates who contested in the 3 states assembly elections of Meghalaya, Nagaland and Tripura.

Out of 818 candidates analysed, 441 are from National parties, 150 are from State parties, 106 are from registered unrecognized parties and 121 candidates are contesting independently.
Criminal Background:
Candidates with Criminal cases: Out of 818 candidates analysed, 69 (8%) have declared criminal cases against themselves in their affidavits.
Candidates with serious criminal cases: 40 (5 %) candidates have declared serious criminal cases against themselves.
Candidates with declared cases related to murder: 4 candidates have declared cases related to murder (IPC Section-302) against themselves.
Candidates with declared cases related to attempt to murder: 12 candidates have declared cases related to Attempt to murder (IPC Section-307) against themselves.
Candidates with declared cases related to crime against women: 4 candidates have declared cases related to crime against women. Out of 4 candidates 1 candidate has declared case related to rape (IPC Section-376) and 1 candidate has declared case related to person committing rape repeatedly on the same woman (IPC Section- 376(2)(n)).
Meghalaya elections:
The Meghayala legislative assembly elections will be held on February 27 2023 to elect MLAs to 60 members. The routes will be counted and the results will be declared on March 2 2023.
The last elections were held in 2018 and the National People's Party under Conrad Sangma formed the government.
Tripura Legislative Elections:
The Tripura elections were held on February 16 2023 to elect 60 members to the legislative assembly. The votes will be counted and results declared on March 2.
In the 2018 elections, the BJP posted a decisive victory and formed the government.
Nagaland elections:
The Nagaland assembly elections will held on February 27 to elect 60 members to the legislative assembly. The votes will counted and results declared on March 2 2023 along with Tripura and Meghalaya.
In the 2018 elections, the Naga People's Front emerged as the single largest party. With no party able to secure a majority, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive party and BJP which won 12 seats formed the government with the support of some independents.
