In Just 30 Days, Bhagwant Mann Compensates Flood-Hit Farmers in Punjab

Punjab's Chief Minister, Bhagwant Mann, has set a new benchmark by swiftly compensating flood-affected farmers. On 13 October 2025, during an event in Chandigarh, he distributed cheques at ₹20,000 per acre to these farmers. This promise was fulfilled within a month, marking the fastest and highest compensation rate in any Indian state. The Mann government not only provided financial support but also met the expectations of the farmers.

The devastating floods in July-August 2025 wreaked havoc across Punjab, affecting 20 districts and destroying over 10 lakh acres of crops. Mustard, rice, vegetables, and fruits were submerged, leading to an estimated loss of ₹1,500 crore. More than 50 lives were lost, and thousands were left homeless. Mandi, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, and Tarn Taran were among the worst-hit areas.

Punjab's New Direction: Sports and Employment

In response to drug issues, the Mann government has initiated a crackdown on traffickers and seized their properties. Additionally, they are investing ₹1,194 crore to build stadiums in 3,100 villages for sports like volleyball and hockey. Youth clubs will manage these facilities. "Leave drugs behind and play sports," said CM Mann.

Employment opportunities have also been a focus for the Mann administration. They have provided 55,000 government jobs based on merit and facilitated four lakh private sector jobs. In Mohali, it was announced that entrepreneurship courses would be introduced in every college to encourage job creation rather than job seeking.

Compensation Efforts Amidst Flood Devastation

The Mann government acted promptly after the floods by conducting surveys and preparing data for over five lakh farmers. By 13 October 2025, cheques were distributed within just 30 days of the disaster. "We requested ₹2,000 crore from the Centre but immediately released ₹1,000 crore from state funds," stated CM Mann.

Farmers expressed gratitude for this prompt action as it rekindled hope amidst their losses. One farmer remarked that while their crops were gone and life had come to a halt temporarily due to the floods, CM Mann's promise brought back optimism.

Paving Way for Punjab's Transformation

The swift compensation process is part of a broader vision for Punjab's transformation under CM Mann's leadership. With initiatives against drug abuse and investments in sports infrastructure alongside employment generation efforts through entrepreneurship courses in colleges—Punjab is poised for change.

"The Punjab model will set an example for the country," said AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal via video conference during the cheque distribution event. He emphasized that farmers are their pride.
