IMA Demands Overhaul of Conditions for Resident Doctors After Tragic Incident
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) announced a nationwide withdrawal of non-emergency medical services for 24 hours starting from August 17 at 6 am. This protest is in response to the rape and murder of a resident doctor at a Kolkata hospital. Essential services will continue, and casualties will be attended to, according to the IMA's statement.

The IMA has put forth five demands, including a complete overhaul of the working and living conditions for resident doctors. They highlighted the need to address issues such as the 36-hour duty shifts and the absence of safe resting spaces. The doctors' body also called for hospitals to be declared safe zones with mandatory security measures.
Central Law and Security Measures
One of the key demands is for a central law to prevent violence against healthcare professionals at workplaces. The IMA stressed that hospital security should be on par with airport security, including CCTVs and security personnel. "Declaring the hospitals as safe zones with mandatory security entitlements is the first step," the IMA stated.
The association also demanded a professional investigation into the crime within a specific timeframe. They called for justice and exemplary punishment for those involved in vandalising the hospital premises. The IMA emphasised that these measures are crucial to prevent such incidents in the future.
Compensation and Justice
The IMA also sought appropriate compensation for the victim's family, reflecting the severity of the crime. They underscored that both the medical community and the nation have been deeply affected by this incident. "Today, both the medical fraternity and the nation are victims," read their statement.
Routine outpatient departments (OPDs) will not operate, and elective surgeries will be postponed during this period. The withdrawal will affect all sectors where modern medicine doctors provide services, according to the IMA.
The RG Kar incident has highlighted two critical issues: severe crimes due to unsafe spaces for women and hooliganism resulting from inadequate security protocols. The IMA's demands aim to address these problems comprehensively.
The association's call for action includes identifying those responsible for vandalism at hospital premises and ensuring they face severe consequences. This move aims to deter future acts of violence against healthcare professionals.
In summary, the IMA's protest seeks significant changes in working conditions, enhanced security measures, and justice for victims of violence in healthcare settings. These steps are seen as essential to protect healthcare professionals and ensure their safety at work.
